About John
As a Director of photography, I have had the good fortune to work all over the world, enthusiastically building a wealth of experience in feature films, tv films, commercials, music promos/concerts, documentaries and award winning short films.
Last years cult film ‘Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel’ (HBO, BBC Films) and the political comedy ‘The Very Social Secretary’ starring Bernard Hill are among my recent drama credits. Previous films include ‘When I’m 64’ directed by Jon Jones (winner- Prix Europa for best drama in 2005) and The Bunker directed by Rob Green.
2010 also saw a return to documentary, shooting ‘The Driver’ with director Peter Webber. This was followed by the feature film ‘Resistance’, directed by Amit Gupta, starring Andrea Riseborough, Tom Wlaschiha and Michael Sheen.
Commercials in the last year have included work with Bryan Buckley, Rob Pritts, Wayne McClammy and Graham Fink.
Alongside my skills as a cinematographer, I also operate on much of my film and commercial work (see website). Often, I think the two are intricately linked and I am happy to light and operate on a film when it works for the project and the director. I am experienced in remote head operating and many years of hand held work.
Born in New York, I frequently work in the USA and hold dual citizenship/American and UK passport. I have worked for many years on 35mm and 16mm film. I also enjoy shooting on digital HD cameras too and am excited by the ways they are improving and developing all the time. I am familiar with a range of high to mid level HD cameras: Arri Alexa, Red M-X, D21, Canon DSLR cameras such as the 5D, Genesis & Sony F35, Panasonic P2 and others.
